High-speed scanning in human memory.

When subjects judge whether a test symbol is contained in a short memorized sequence of symbols, their mean reaction-time increases linearly with the length of the sequence. The linearity and slope of the function imply the existence of an internal serial-comparison process whose average rate is between 25 and 30 symbols per second.

Modulating speed-accuracy strategies in major depression.

BACKGROUND Depression is associated with deficits in cognitive flexibility. The role of general slowing in modulating more specific cognitive deficits is however unclear. AIM We assessed how depression affects the capacity to strategically adapt behavior between harsh and prudent response modalities and how general and specific processes may contribute to performance deficits. METHODS Patie...

lmpulsivity and Speed-Accuracy Strategies in Intelligence Test Performance

A number of authors have expressed concern about our lack of knowledge of speedaccuracy strategies in intelligence tests. This study examines whether relations between intelligence-test performance and information-processing measures depend on individual differences in speed-accuracy preferences rather than on capacity limitations and whether the impact of strategic variables changes with incre...

Individual Differences in Processing Speed and Working Memory Speed as Assessed with the Sternberg Memory Scanning Task

The Sternberg Memory Scanning (SMS) task provides a measure of processing speed (PS) and working memory retrieval speed (WMS). In this task, participants are presented with sets of stimuli that vary in size. After a delay, one item is presented, and participants indicate whether or not the item was part of the set. Performance is assessed by speed and accuracy for both the positive (item is par...

Study of Numerical Processing Speed, Implicit and Explicit Memory, Active and Passive Memory, Conservation Abilities, and Visual-Spatial Skills of Students with Dyscalculia

Background and Purpose: Learning disorder is one of the common disorders in students, which can lead to the occurrence of educational problems and secondary disorders in them. Based on psychopathological criteria, dyscalculia is one of the subcategories of learning disorder. Children with this disorder have problems in perception of spatial relations and in different cognitive abilities. Theref...
